Why I Don’t Work With Most Insurance Plans
A thoughtful approach to therapy that prioritizes presence, privacy, and personalized care, so you can focus on what matters most: your healing.
At Together Tree Therapy, I believe in offering care that is personalized, ethical, and rooted in genuine connection. That means creating a therapeutic experience that isn’t rushed or dictated by insurance companies, but instead guided by what best supports your healing.
This page is designed to help you understand why I’ve chosen not to participate in most insurance networks and how that decision enables more meaningful and focused work together.
At the core of every meaningful therapeutic relationship is presence: space to be fully seen, supported, and cared for. That kind of work takes time, energy, and flexibility.
Unfortunately, most insurance plans make it hard to maintain. The majority of providers pay therapists far below sustainable rates, often 40–70% less than the cost of care. In turn, this forces many clinicians to overextend themselves or limit the depth and frequency of their sessions to keep up. That’s not a model I believe in.
Insurance also introduces rigid structures that can interfere with the therapy process. It often requires diagnoses to justify treatment, limits how frequently we can meet, or forces us to define our healing in ways that fit billing systems rather than real life.
Most importantly, using insurance typically involves sharing personal details, such as mental health diagnoses and treatment plans, with third parties. When we work outside those networks, your privacy is better protected, and your care remains confidential and private.
Choosing not to join most insurance panels allows me to prioritize what matters most: you, your story, and the quality of care I provide.
Protecting the Heart of the Work
The Value of Private Pay Therapy
If I’m not in-network with your insurance, you still have options, and you’re not alone. Many clients choose to invest in private pay therapy because they value:
A confidential and deeply personalized experience
More flexibility in session frequency, approach, and duration
A therapist who is entirely focused on care, not claims or coding
Support that’s grounded in a relationship, not reimbursement
This model makes space for therapy to feel collaborative, empowering, and adaptable. For many clients across Louisville and the surrounding area, this kind of care feels not only more effective but also more sustainable over time.

Using Out-of-Network Benefits
If I’m not in-network with your specific insurance plan, you may still be eligible for partial reimbursement for therapy through your out-of-network mental health benefits.
Here’s how it works:
After each session, I can provide a Superbill, an itemized receipt with the information your insurance company needs to consider reimbursement. You’ll submit this directly to your insurance provider for review.
To check your benefits, ask your insurance:
Do I have out-of-network coverage for mental health or therapy?
What percentage of therapy costs will be reimbursed?
Is there a deductible I must meet first?
Are there limits to the number of sessions that can be covered?
This is a standard option for clients who want flexibility while still accessing some insurance reimbursement for their therapy.
Building a Better System, Together
I know that navigating insurance and mental health can feel overwhelming. But there’s also an opportunity to be part of a broader shift.
The choice to invest in out-of-network therapy is not just about individual care; it’s also about advocating for a system that values mental health professionals and the clients we serve.

A Thoughtful Investment in Your Wellbeing
Whether you're using insurance or paying out of pocket, your therapy should be centered around you, not around limitations.
By remaining out-of-network with most insurance providers, I’m able to offer therapy that is steady, flexible, and grounded in presence. I welcome you to reach out with any questions, whether you're exploring private pay options, navigating your benefits, or simply wondering what the next steps might look like.
